Tony Romo tied a Dallas Cowboys record with five touchdown passes Thursday in a 38-10 victory over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. It was the ninth time it's happened in team history and the first time on Thanksgiving. More impressive: Troy Aikman never did it in regulation and Roger Staubach never did it at all. As wild as it seems to mention Romo with those Hall of Famers -- especially because this was only his fifth start -- he's certainly proving worthy. After spending the first 3 1/2 years of his career on the bench, Romo won NFC offensive player of the week honors and outplayed Peyton Manning in his previous two starts. Dallas has won three straight for the first time this season and is 4-1 since Romo took over for Drew Bledsoe. Now 7-4, the Cowboys go into the weekend with a half-game lead over the New York Giants in the NFC East and are second only to Chicago in the conference. Terry Glenn caught the first two TD passes, of 30 and 2 yards. Marion Barber III caught the next two, giving him an NFC-best 11 touchdowns. The record-tying fifth touchdown went to Terrell Owens. Tampa Bay (3-8) drove 80 yards for a touchdown on the first drive of the...
Miami at Detroit
Joey Harrington never won three straight games in a single season with the Detroit Lions. He's already done it in just six starts for the Miami Dolphins. Harrington, a former first-round pick of the Lions, returns to Detroit on Thanksgiving as the Dolphins try to move within one game of .500. Harrington was traded to Miami (4-6) in May, just four years after the Lions (2-8) drafted him third overall. He became the scapegoat for Detroit's woes during his time there, as the team went 18-40 in games during which Harrington played. The quarterback's return to Ford Field -- where he was booed unmercifully -- will provide intrigue in what seems to be a lackluster matchup. "I know that stadium pretty well," said Harrington, who has led Miami to three straight wins and is 3-3 since taking over for Daunte Culpepper. "I know what section the boos come from." After losing to Atlanta last Thanksgiving, the Lions fired Steve Mariucci, and cornerback Dre' Bly later blamed Harrington for it. Bly is doing his best not to escalate the drama. "I ain't talking this week," Bly said. Harrington threw 60 touchdowns and 62 interceptions with the Lions, finishing...
Chiefs host Broncos in marquee Thanksgiving game
BRISTOL, Connecticut (Ticker) - The Kansas City Chiefs will join the traditional Thanksgiving hosts. Chiefs owner Lamar Hunt lobbied for a long time to host a Thanksgiving game. He finally gets his wish Thursday night when the Chiefs (6-4) host the Denver Broncos (7-3) in a battle of AFC West rivals. It will be the first regular-season game on the NFL Network and begins a string of five Thursday night contests. The Dallas Cowboys (6-4) and Detroit Lions (2-8) continue their tradition of hosting the holiday afternoon games. With a chance to move into sole possession of first place in the NFC East, the Cowboys will face the last-place Tampa Bay Buccaneers (3-7). The Lions (2-8), who are tied with Arizona for the worst record in the NFL, will play the Miami Dolphins (4-6) in an interconference contest. But the marquee game will take place at night. Denver is one game behind the first-place San Diego Chargers in the AFC West. The Chiefs can tie the Broncos for second place with a win on Thursday. In the first meeting on September 17, Jason Elam kicked a 39-yard field goal with 9:50 left in overtime to lift the Broncos to a 9-6 victory....
Taking a back seat
Playoff talk is heating up. There are a few teams you figure to be locks – the Colts, Bears, Ravens and Chargers – but there's much to be determined between now and the season finale. For this week's Pick 6, I'm going to look at the three games on Thanksgiving Day and three Sunday contests involving teams in the playoff hunt. Miami Dolphins at Detriot Lions I have never understood why the league insists on having one of these Thanksgiving Day games in Motown given that the Detroit Lions are perennially a bad team. It'll be interesting to see how Miami Dolphins quarterback Joey Harrington fares against his old club. You figure that he'll really be up for this game, but so will the Lions. One thing we know: If the Lions lose, they can't blame him. Also worth watching: How the Lions try to handle Dolphins defensive end Jason Taylor. He's playing at an incredibly high level right now (four sacks, two interception returns for touchdowns the past four games) and I don't see Detroit having any answers for him. They're going to have to commit so many people to blocking him.
Harrington's return makes Dolphins-Lions game interesting
The Detroit Lions' tradition of playing on Thanksgiving dates to 1934. History goes only so far, though, making the matchup with the Miami Dolphins hardly seem like must-see TV. Joey Harrington, however, gives people outside of Detroit and Miami a reason to tune in. The quarterback's return Thursday to Ford Field, where he was booed last year at a practice, provides an intriguing story line for those searching for a reason to watch two teams that are eight games under .500 combined. "I would be lying if I said it was going to be just another game, because I'd be ignoring the obvious," Harrington said. "It's not going to be a sterile game where I walk into Jacksonville, or someplace that I had no connection." Detroit gave up on Harrington just four seasons after drafting him third overall, and had to settle for a conditional pick from Miami that might end up being a fifth-rounder. The Lions didn't want to give Harrington a $4 million bonus in June, especially when they signed free agents Jon Kitna and Josh McCown to replace him. Harrington wanted to leave, too. Lions cornerback Dre' Bly blamed him when coach Steve Mariucci was fired...
